Zuck willing to pay super-money for super-intelligence, and Cursor & Replit are firing at all cylinders.
After hiring Alexander Wang and Nat Friedman, Zuck finally found his way into hiring from major AI labs like OpenAI and Antrophic. It comes with a premium, though — $100 M just in bonuses across 4 years for the recently hired researchers, with comp packages as big as $300 M. Even though we’ve been used to big money in tech, this goes beyond any former threshold. AI is a revolutionary technology, and there’s a tremendous upside for the company that performs better.
Meta has a good case to bet heavily on AI, as time spent using ChatGPT or other LLMs is time not spent using Meta products, and Meta’s business model is based on the attention they get from each and every one of us. They need to successfully implement AI, and if I have to guess, they’ll try to monetize the same way they monetize everything else — through attention. Either that happens directly when interacting with MetaAI, or just by spending more time on Meta’s apps, that’s up for grabs.
